On selected dates, 16 states are holding sales tax holidays on clothes, supplies, computers, and other items to help families prepare for the upcoming school year. Here's where and when you can purchase these items without having to pay sales tax in your state.

When: July 17-19

  •         Computers (up to $750)
  •         School supplies (up to $50)
  •         Books (up to $30) 

Arkansas Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 1-2

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing (up to $100)
  •         Select school supplies
  •         Art supplies and instructional materials 

Connecticut Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 16-22

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing and footwear (up to $100)

Florida Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 7-9

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing, footwear, and accessories (up to $60)
  •         School supplies (up to $15)
  •         Computers and accessories (up to $1,000)

Iowa Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 7-8

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing and footwear (up to $100)

Maryland Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 9-15

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing and footwear (up to $100)
  •         Backpacks (the first $40 are tax-exempt)

Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 29-30

What’s on sale:

  • All tangible personal property that costs up to $2,500
  • There is no sales tax on clothes less than $175 all year-round

Mississippi Sales Tax Holiday

When: July 31-August 1

What’s on sale:

  • Clothing, footwear (up to $100)
  • School supplies (up to $100)

Missouri Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 7-9

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing (up to $100)
  •         School supplies (up to $50)
  •         Personal computers (up to $1,500)
  •         Computer software (up to $350)
  •         Graphing calculators (up to $150)

New Mexico Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 7-9

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing and footwear (up to $100)
  •         School supplies (up to $30)
  •         Computers (up to $1,000)
  •         Computer-related items (up to $500)

Oklahoma Sales Tax Holiday

South Carolina Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 7-9

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing and footwear (no limit)
  •         School supplies (no limit)
  •         Computers, computer parts, and accessories (no limit)
  •         Books and musical instruments (tax-free is “used for school assignments”)
  •         Bed and bath (no limit on items including blankets, bedspreads, bed linens, towels, etc.)

Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday

When: July 31-August 2

  •         Clothing and shoes (up to $200)
  •         School supplies (up to $200)
  •         Computers, tablets, smartphones, televisions, video game consoles (up to $3,000)

Texas Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 7-9

What’s on sale:

  •         School supplies and backpacks (up to $100)

Virginia Sales Tax Holiday

When: August 7-9

What’s on sale:

  •         Clothing and footwear (up to $100)
  •         School supplies and backpacks (up to $200)
  •         Energy Star and Watersense products (up to $2,500)
  •         Hurricane and emergency preparedness products
